As some of you know, the project began over dinner, when a group of UVA Europeanists started thinking about a topic that would be fun and intellectually serious at the same time. That conversation quickly developed into a week-long program here on Grounds, with talks, roundtables, screenings, and lively discussions of Eurovision performances and controversies. The special issue brings together expanded essays that grew out of those exchanges.
We are especially pleased that so many UVA colleagues contributed, and that our invited guests joined us in giving the project a more lasting form. The issue includes essays by Dean Vuletic, Luca Cian, Ivan Raykoff, Catherine Baker, Ella Jackson, Kerem Coşar, Zvi Gilboa, Kyrill Kunakhovich, Peter Debaere, and Manuela Achilles, on Eurovision’s history, politics, music, branding, languages, voting patterns, and visions of Europe.
Please take a look, and feel free to share this link with students, colleagues, friends, and others who might be interested in Eurovision and what it can tell us about Europe and its place in the world. And if you are not yet familiar with the Eurovision Song Contest, this may be the perfect moment to start preparing: the Eurovision semi-finals take place on May 12 and 14, followed by the Grand Final on May 16.
