The European Studies M.A. Program at the University of Virginia (UVA) will be hosting their “Transatlantic Futures: Europe and the Americas” symposium on Friday, April 11th in Charlottesville, VA.
UVA’s European Studies program is seeking papers examining the evolving relationship between Europe and the Americas across the 20th and 21st centuries. Since the First World War, the political and cultural climate between the two continents has fluctuated considerably and will continue changing, introducing new and at times uncertain implications for the futures of transatlantic politics, economics, society, and culture.
Requirements:
European Studies is an inter- and transdisciplinary field. Therefore, we encourage submissions relating to one or more of the following:
● Politics, law, and human rights in Europe
● Nationalism and genocide studies
● European history
● Mass migration to and/or from Europe
● Environmental issues affecting Europe
● European arts and literatures
● Economics in Europe and the Americas
● Religion on the European continent
● Cultural/area studies in Europe
Eligibility: This call is open to any graduate student and advanced undergraduates. Jointly authored proposals are welcome.
Accepted submissions will be granted 15-20 minutes for presentation at the April symposium with added time for discussion and questions. Limited funds are available for transportation compensation, but we hope to financially aid those chosen to present.
To submit, email Connor Smith (crs2wp@virginia.edu) with the subject line “EURS Symposium 2025,” making sure to include in your email an abstract (no more than 500 words), title, author(s), email address, mailing address, and academic affiliation (institution, program, year). Abstracts must be submitted by March 15, 2025.
If you have any questions, please contact Connor Smith (crs2wp@virginia.edu).
